THIS IS NOT MY BEAUTIFUL AUTHOR WEBSITE
hastily thrown together incomplete list of links to my writing
It’s bad practice to admit that I can’t do it. I can’t do much of anything today. I can’t self-publish a novel. I can’t apply to a writer’s residency or apply for a grant. I can’t review any more books. Not wholly true, but it feels out of my grip right now.
Another thing I can’t do is make an authors website. You know those places that people ask if you have so they can go and read some of your writing. This is the closest thing to that, that I have. I’ll get there eventually. But today, having woken up from a coma-nap where I ceased to exist yet horrible things were happening, and all that remained is the feeling, I am throwing together a bunch of links to my writing for you to sift through and enjoy maybe. Realistically it is probably not going to happen. I’m trying to combat naïveté with more touching naïveté, I’m piling it on. Here is the long but incomplete list of links to my online writing, starting with the list of book reviews I sent, like a résumé, to Southwest Review to try to get paid book reviewing work but they haven’t responded, might be a situation where they don’t formally say No to you, the No is in the silence, which in this situation might be its own special variety of rejection pain. Oops, we’re not supposed to mention rejections! But, this is not a rejection, as we know them, this is something else, more like a failure to get a job. Anyway, the reviews:

I don’t know what to say to those of you who dip into these. I also don’t know what to say to those of you who don’t. I only see you as vague dotted-line outlines of analytic info on here. I only can tell if you’ve opened the email I sent you or not. That’s it. Other than that you are shielded from my eyes like citizens of Subscriber-land where it would be unconstitutional for me to look into your affairs on here. It sucks. I want to peer into your minds as you read these newsletters, and see what gives you dopamine, what makes you sad or afraid. Nope. I can’t know that. I just see your traffic. I hope that doesn’t turn your stomach and make you unsubscribe.
There’s something a little embarrassing and exhibitionistic and plagued with self-promotional worms about those who hand you a squirming heap of links. These will become part of an author website one day, I swear. I felt like going from zero website, to partial and ragged and sad website, to full and polished website. Things by half steps.
Don’t mind me. Enjoy.
Putting all these links together is the most time-consuming part of doing a website. I know, I just did one, and the links are THE WORST. f you need a hand doing a site, let me know. Despite what I just said, it's not that hard. Here's mine, so you can see what it looks like: https://www.shawmystery.com.
