LISTENINGS 003 - RAP
LISTENINGS 003
While talking about rap with some friends the other day, I reflected on the fact that I know nothing of rap current day. I only know of a few touch points from years ago that stood out to me and represent rap I like, or should say more accurately, rap I respond to. I donāt know a lot, Iām very ignorant, and a lot of rap produces feelings of alienation and fear in me. Iām too old and letās say not the target demographic per se. Hereās some rap that stands out to me:
Oh it goes without saying that rap language is very problematic and triggering to some people. The selections I bring to you here are not nice.
Juelz Santana - āDipset (Santanaās Town)ā
The Game - ā240 Bars (G-Unit Diss)ā
Three 6 Mafia - āStay Fly (High)ā
Quasimoto - āFatbacksā
I spent a lot of time at one point years ago watching battle rap on YouTube. Thereās endless footage of rap battles with people just destroying each other in terrible ways using sheer insult poetry. I recommend it if you want to see some ridiculous put downs and snapping and clowning. My favorite MC is probably Dirt, because heās a savage and also because he happens to be from Syracuse which is near where I grew up. Here he is battling Lexx Luthor from Staten Island (I presume). Check out round two where Dirt demolishes Lexx for being on the Internet too much (āhe asked Facebook for a Newportā), this is a lesson we all could learn from, especially me in pandemic mode. Warning: very homophobic language and insults.
